Feature Bean: Los Placeres Estate (Nicaraguan)

Fratello Coffee Roasters
Address: 4201-9th Street S.E
Neighbourhood: Calgary, AB
website, @twitter, Tel:1-800-465-7227

Second bag to be from the Calgary Roasters.
They were quite generous, and as such I hosted a coffee party with 10 people last month. The Coffees were quite the hit.
The Goods
Machine: Hario V60 02
Grinder: Hario Slim Handgrinder
Beans: Nicaraguan Los Placeres Estate - Direct Trade
Composition: Single Estate
Roasters: Fratello Coffee
Located: Calgary, AB

Verdict: Cherry Cola Pop with a smooth velvet finish. Similar to good caramel as it melts in your mouth. This sweetness is attributed to the honey process - where some of the pulp is left on to dried creating sweet burst of extra flavour. It's really good, especially paired with apricot shortbread cookies.
Information from Fratello: Aromas of caramelized cherries, a delicate buttery body, flavors of milk chocolate & pecans with a clean lingering grape acidity.

Bean Talk: TFN; Not Your Average Joe

Cafe: @home
Address: @home
Neighbourhood: #wouldn'tyouliketoknow
website, @esproadventures

I waited patiently for my new American Weight - Pocket Scale to arrive from US - by way of Amazon.com

So I decided to bust it out to try the new sample package of
The Fresh Coffee Network's: Not Your Average Joe

Having just discovered that TFCN provides locally roasted bean for many resto establishments, it seemed fair to try and get my hands on their beans. Drake, Fresh, Gilead... (all future posts)

Method: Hario V60 (Hand Pour/Pour Over)
Beans: Not Your Average Joe
Origin:Peru, Ethopia, Sumatra
Grinder: Hario Slim Hand Grinder
Stats: 22g, producing 400g of coffee
Timing: 35s Pre-Brew, 3:40 Total Brew Time.

Verdict: Nice smooth blend, not really pushing too far in the bright category. No eye-defining features, but a nice overall smoothness that is very centrally minded. This blend is defined as medium, and it's very neutral.
Gets more punchy as the coffee cools, allowing the Ethopian florals to come out.
Final Thoughts: Great to win over non-indie coffee drinkers that are looking for some middle ground.

Bean Talk: Stumptown Costa Rica Montes de Oro

Newest Spring Crops!

Costa Rice Montes de Oro
Elevation: 1500-1700M
Varietal: Caturra, Bourbon, Catuai
Region: Latin America

Roasters: Stumptown Coffee Roasters
Located: Brooklyn, NY (since I picked this up at LIT on College)

Process: fully washed

Brew process: Hario V60 Pourover
Details: 35 pre-infusion, 3:50 total brew-time.

Verdict:
Aromatics: Smoky chocolate
HOT: smooth chocolate with reducution of a cherry glaze, with hints light spicy/smoked meat - subtle clean finish.
Cooling: citrus, savory body starts to take over.

Roasters Notes: Sparkling cherry juice is balanced well with creamy milk chocolate and notes of citrus in this complex, fully washed coffee.

I'll need to pick up a Red Cup to match my V60.... old school stopwatch action. Enjoy it at LIT espresso.

V60; Grumpy Honduras

Surprise, surprise Toronto. SNOW!

No grumpiness here, just exctasy with this mornings brew. The start of the new season of roasting has gone off amazingly well, and most cafe have been brewing some incredible SO and Blends. This can only mean that everyone is benefitting from the source of these beans, acquiring knowledge through craftmanship.

We so easily forget who roasted, or where the source of the beans are located, or most importantly the farmers that work hard all-year round. Their craft of cultivating amazing beans by pouring blood, sweat and soil into highlighting the best quality that they can obtain from the fruit.

As we've now hit spring, this is a Thank You tribute to all farmers - not just coffee farmers.

Coffee: Lo Mejor de San Vicente ( Pena Blanca, Santa Barbara region), Honduras
Varietals: Pacas + Bourbon
Producer: Santos Alexi. Flor de la pena + moreno
Roaster: Cafe Grumpy (Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NYC)

Roasters note: fruited and sweet with hibscus, ripe red grapefruit and honey

Method: Hario V60 Pour over

Verdict: Sweetness, sweetness, sweetness. clean honey tones with a ringing bright sweet lime-like finish.
Nostrils: strong-tea

Overall: this microlot is definitely lush! Sweetness from the first sip, gets even better as the fresh brewed coffee starts to cool. The sweet, fully ripe ruby grapefruit starts to shine, and the pleasent after-taste lingers just enough that you wish you brewed a big quantity.

But with amazing crops this year, the talks of coffee prices on the rise may be generating a divide between great coffee, and creating a larger gap from the "bad, unwanted" coffee. What are your thoughts?
